Metz Family has Ancestors on Both Sides of the Civil War

By: Kent Courtney

Sometimes you get a chance to see history right in front of you. It happened to me as I was canvassing businesses in Fairfield, Pennsylvania about the upcoming town reenactment in Fairfield (See: BattleOfFairfield.com and the mobile-ready site: FairfieldReenactment.com).

I went into Metz’s Hardware to talk to them about the Fairfield Reenactment and ask them if I could put up a flyer in their window. Suddenly, I found myself preaching to the choir, when I started telling Judy Lowe Metz about the event.

You see, Judy’s great great grandfather was Kaleb Lowe of North Carolina.

Another of Judy’s great great grandfather was William Metz of the 209th Pennsylvania Regiment.

Both were soldiers in the Civil War that fought at the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1, 2 and 3, 1863 - on different sides!

As Judy was telling her story, she walked over to the cash register and right next to it was the book, Fairfield in the Civil War (ThomasPublications.com).  She thumbed through the pages and found a listing of Civil War Soldiers from Fairfield. On page 29 was the name, William H. Metz, 209th PA.

She said she has William’s Civil War Discharge Certificate. She said it is on a large sheet of paper that starts out “To Whom it may Concern”, and there’s an eagle on top.

Her son, Dave, was there and he added that there were three Fairfield companies raised to defend Pennsylvania from the Confederate invasion.

Judy said, “We don’t know much about Kaleb Lowe. We know he was from North Carolina, but we don’t know exactly where or what regiment he was in. We’re not even sure if he marched through Fairfield.”

“But, just imagine if the two ancestors had seen each other”, Judy added.

If you visit Fairfield, PA, stop by Metz’s hardware.  You’ll get a warm welcome, some friendly conversation and a chance to shop in a hardware store like I remember when I was growing up.

Metz’s Hardware is at 105 West Main Street, in Fairfield, PA 17320. Call them at: 717-642-8448.
